Frequently Asked Questions

Reach & Distribution

Who receives it?

Every issue reaches roughly 24,900 addresses (houses, apartments, businesses, and farms) across communities within 35 km of Pembroke — representing an estimated 55,000–60,000 people on the Ontario side of the Ottawa Valley

How is it distributed?

Through Canada Post — directly to doors, not racks or bins. Every household in the distribution zone receives a copy, which means your ad isn't competing for attention on a shelf.

Which communities are included in the distribution zone?

The distribution covers a 35 km radius around Pembroke, spanning communities across the broader Ottawa Valley on the Ontario side. This includes towns, villages, and rural areas that are often underserved by larger regional media.

Is the distribution targeted or blanket coverage?

It's blanket coverage to all households in the zone — which means saturation reach. Every door gets a copy, so there's no guessing whether your target customer saw it.

What's the cost per door?

Distribution reaches approximately 24,900 addresses. We work with advertisers to find placements that deliver strong value relative to the cost-per-door — typically far lower than digital platforms when you factor in guaranteed impressions.

Format & Content

What's the "blended format"?

Every advertiser gets both print presence (in the physical publication) and digital presence (through our online ad store). *"Online is at the Door"* — your business reaches customers in both places.

How often does it publish?

Quarterly — four times per year, giving advertisers consistent seasonal visibility without the burden of a monthly commitment.

What kind of content appears in the publication?

The Local Key is built around the Ottawa Valley community — local business features, seasonal content, and resources relevant to the region. Advertising appears alongside content readers actually want, not buried in a feed.

What ad sizes and formats are available?

We offer a range of placements to suit different budgets and visibility goals. Reach out and we'll walk you through the current options and what works best for your type of business.

Pricing & Getting Started

What does it cost to get started?

Our introductory offer requires no upfront payment. Fees are due only after Canada Post distribution is complete — so it goes out to almost 25,000 addresses before you pay!

Why do you offer deferred payment?

Because we believe in the product. If we're asking a local business to trust us, we should take on some of that risk ourselves. You advertise, we distribute, then you pay — simple as that.

Is there a long-term commitment required?

No. We want advertisers to come back because the results speak for themselves, not because they're locked into a contract. That said, multi-issue placements are available for businesses that want consistent seasonal presence.

How do I get started?

Reach out to us directly. We'll learn about your business, walk you through placement options, and get your ad into the next available issue. No complicated onboarding — just a conversation.

Why Advertise with Us?

How is The Local Key different from Google or Facebook ads?

Those are American-owned platforms that charge you whether your ad reaches anyone relevant or not. The Local Key is Canadian-owned, printed on recycled Canadian paper, printed in the Ottawa area, and delivered by Canada Post. Your advertising dollars stay local and reach a defined, real community — not an algorithm.

Why should I advertise locally in addition to, or even instead of, online?

Local print advertising reaches your actual neighbours. It's tangible, trusted, and not skippable. Combined with our digital component, you get the reach of both worlds — without handing your budget to a platform headquartered in California.

Does print advertising still work?

Absolutely. Studies consistently show print has higher trust and recall than digital ads. And unlike a social media post, a physical publication sits in homes — it gets picked up more than once, shared with family members, and referenced over time.

What types of businesses are a good fit?

The Local Key is built for Ottawa Valley businesses of all sizes — home services, health and wellness, retail, food and dining, professional services, and more. If your customers live within 35 km of Pembroke, you belong here.

Can a small business afford to advertise?

Yes. We designed our pricing with small and medium local businesses in mind. There's no minimum spend requirement to get started, and our introductory offer lowers the barrier even further.

The Canadian Story

What's the Canadian story behind The Local Key?

From paper to print to delivery: recycled Canadian paper, printed in the Ottawa area, distributed by Canada Post. Every part of the supply chain is Canadian — and that matters to us and to our readers.

Why does Canadian ownership matter?

When you advertise with an American-owned platform, your money leaves the community. When you advertise with The Local Key, it stays here — supporting local publishing, local printing, and local postal workers.

Do readers respond to the local angle?

Yes. Ottawa Valley residents have a strong sense of community identity. A publication that reflects their region, supports their neighbours, and is made here earns a different kind of attention than content pushed by an algorithm.

About the Publication

What is The Local Key?

The Local Key is a community publication co-founded by brother and sister, Tom Patrick and Libby Patrick, based in Pembroke, Ontario. It serves the Ottawa Valley region with a blended print-and-digital format, distributed quarterly through Canada Post to approximately 24,900 households within a 35 km radius of Pembroke.

Who started The Local Key and why?

It was founded by a brother-and-sister team rooted in the Pembroke community. The mission was simple: give local Ottawa Valley businesses a trusted, affordable, Canadian-owned alternative to large American advertising platforms — while building something the community could be proud of.

Is The Local Key independently owned?

Yes. We are a locally owned, Canadian publication — not a franchise, not a subsidiary of a media conglomerate. Decisions are made here, in the Ottawa Valley, by people who live here.

How long has The Local Key been operating?

We are in our launch phase, actively building our advertiser base and community presence. Early advertisers benefit from introductory pricing and ground-floor visibility as the publication grows.
